A Liberal Democrat council candidate, Neil Hamilton has been found dead after spending the day campaigning in the north east of England.

Hamilton, believed to be in his 60s, was standing in Westerhope, Newcastle.

A party spokesman confirmed that the police were called to his address this evening after colleagues were unable to contact him.

The candidate’s death is likely to invalidate the result in the ward and result in a fresh election.
