Old Cutlery works expects Big Change
Plans for a new development of shops, bars, a gallery and library on one of the Sheffield’s busiest street have been revealed.
Nearly 1,400 square metres of new eating and drinking establishments, independent design and fashion shops could open up on the first and second floors of the Hutton’s Buildings on West Street.
People will be able to enjoy the sunny days in a new restaurant which will open on the ground level with tables and chairs outdoors in an internal court-yard.
A training centre, nursery, art gallery, library and gym will also be available in the third and fourth levels.
The building is occupied by bars and restaurants at present, including the Lava Lounge. And, it’s also the home to Ben’s centre, a hospital and medical establishment. These businesses will remain if the plans go ahead.
Planning officers at Sheffield Council have recommended the project is granted consent when it’s considered by councillors at a meeting today.
“These will be supported by a range of complimentary smaller scale services, voluntary or arts sector workshops together with a food and drink offer available on site,” said in the councillors’ meeting report.
Objections
But, objections come from residents nearby worried the redevolpment may cause additional noise and increase anti-social behaviour associated with alcohol excess.
A planning committee meeting is set to begin at 2 o’clock tomorrow afternoon at Sheffield Town Hall.
Time to pay tribute to our Women of Steel

They will be forever remembered thanks to the memorial planned for the heart of Sheffield.
Four different general options for the memorial at a cabinet meeting next week will be discussed by councillors on the cabinet meeting on Wednesday April 28 included a figurative bronze sculpture in Barkers Pool; An abstract, contemporary sculpture at the top of Howard Street; Commemorative plaques as part of the seating in Howard Street; and A garden of remembrance.
Kathleen Roberts, one of the steel workers said “it’s about time woman were paid respect for what they did after not a word of thinks.”
For The Generation
This memorial will help future generations understand more about the women’s courage, endeavour and hard work during this dark period..
The project will also include an educational programme so young people can learn about the important chapter in Sheffield’s history.
Time for photographs as well as other materials, and other ideas for telling the women’s stories are still being explored will be available.
University offers chance to record your own beats
If you’ve ever fancied yourself as a music producer now could be your chance thanks to the University of Sheffield.
The Sound Studios are giving people the opportunity to produce electro acoustic music later on today. The event is all part of the city’s Curious Festival – which is celebrating the strange and unusual through sound, vision and performance.
During the session you’ll get the chance to record two or three sounds, develop them individually and then get together in a group to edit and mix a short piece of music.
Well we had a go earlier trying to mix the JUS news jingle, here’s our revamped effort.
If you think you a better job get your self down to the Jessop building from 6 tonight.
