NHS staff have given their support for the ‘Walk to Work’ week and the ‘Walk Sheffield’ campaign, which starts on Monday 9 May and Saturday 14 May respectively.
The events have been organised to increase awareness of the importance of exercising daily. They have been held to encourage Sheffield residents to take part in exercise, whether it is walking daily or taking entertaining walks during art and history tours around the city centre.
It is recommended that adults should undertake 30 minutes of moderate physical activity, five days a week, to maintain a healthy lifestyle.
Dawn Lockley, NHS Sheffield’s lead on the Living Neighbourhoods project, said: “Walking has been described as the nearest thing to perfect exercise – it’s free, easy and is suitable for virtually everyone, regardless of their fitness.
“We’re so lucky in Sheffield though. We have unrivalled opportunities for walking and is one of the ‘greenest’ cities in Europe, surrounded by our seven hills and an entire third of us located within the Peak District National Park.”
NHS officers, meanwhile, have reminded Sheffield residents that, by increasing physical activity, the risks of becoming obese or developing inactivity related heart disease and Type 2 diabetes are reduced.
